The bakery is famous for two things: its incredibly fresh and delicious bread, and its unwavering dedication to quality and community. Sung Sim Dang started as a small steamed bun stand and has grown into a beloved establishment. It's a place with a truly meaningful history!

The reason this legendary bread has people lining up from all over Korea is because it's simply that good. The lines for morning openings are no joke. When it's at its most popular, if you arrive a little late, you might not be able to buy any bread at all.

  • Pantaron Chive Bread (판타롱부추빵): A delicious contrast to the sweet flavors. This bread is soft and chewy, filled with chives, eggs, and glass noodles. The warm, savory flavor pairs wonderfully with coffee. It's similar to a dumpling but in bread form, and the texture is fantastic. It's surprisingly delicious and a favorite among many.

  • Mentaiko Baguette (명란바게트): A popular recent addition. This baguette combines a crispy French-style baguette with a savory and spicy mentaiko (pollock roe) cream spread. It's a burst of umami that seafood lovers will adore. I don't usually eat mentaiko, but I was hooked after just one bite. I've vowed to buy at least three of these next time!

  • Fried Sweet Potato Soboro (튀소구마): A sibling of the original Fried Soboro, this one features a sweet potato filling instead of red bean paste. It's a bit milder and sweeter, perfect if you love the taste of sweet potatoes. It's very similar to the original, just with sweet potato inside. I personally think the red bean one is more delicious.

Tips for a Great Sung Sim Dang Experience

  1. Go Early: Sung Sim Dang is incredibly popular, and the lines can get long, especially on weekends. The morning wait can be intense. But if you're going to visit, I highly recommend going in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds and get the freshest selection.

  2. Grab a Tray and Tongs: Just like at other bakeries in Korea, you'll grab a tray and a pair of tongs at the entrance to select your bread. Once you've chosen everything, just head to the counter to pay!

  3. Don't Be Afraid to Try Everything: The staff constantly restocks, so you can always find freshly made goods. Be adventurous and pick a few items that catch your eye. You might just find a new favorite! All the bread is delicious. After you taste it, you might feel like taking about 20 pieces home with you!

  4. Don't Forget the Drinks and Cakes: Sung Sim Dang also has a cafe area where you can enjoy excellent coffee and tea. Their cakes are also famous, especially the "딸기케이크" (Strawberry Cake) known for its fresh strawberries and rich cream. The cakes can be a little pricey, but they're worth every penny. They're packed with a ton of fruit! If you have a chance, you must try it.

Where to Find Sung Sim Dang

The most famous branch is the Main Store (본점), located near Daejeon Station. This is the original and largest store, where you can find the full range of products.


There's also a branch inside Daejeon Station (대전역점), perfect for grabbing a souvenir before you hop on the train.

  • Main Store (본점): It's a short walk from Daejeon Station, and the iconic yellow sign is easy to spot.

  • Daejeon Station Branch (대전역점): Located on the second floor of the station building. It's a smaller shop but carries all the essential favorites.

The Perfect Souvenir

Sung Sim Dang's bread, especially the Fried Soboro, makes for a great souvenir. They are sold in beautiful gift boxes, which are the perfect way to share a piece of Daejeon with your friends and family. However, be careful with carrying them on a plane, as they can spoil!
